This truly is the best chocolate cake recipe! Moist, full flavored deliciousness! I made it in a 9X13 pan and it was perfect. This is our new favorite. I frosted with the linked cream cheese icing, using only 3 cups of powder sugar, to keep it from getting too sweet. It was delicious and the perfect level of sweetness. This recipe is a keeper!

Hi Monica! This will fit in a 9 x 13 but I’m not sure on a bake time.

Hi Judy! This will make too much batter for one pan. You’d need to split it so it doesn’t overflow your pan.

Could I use this same pan or a 9″ x 2.5″ round pan for a single layer of this chocolate cake? For how long would I bake it . . . 45 minutes? I can’t wait to try this recipe. I am severely lactose intolerant and thus use lactose free items to cook and bake. I look for chocolate cake recipes that use cocoa rather than chocolate chips and squares. Thanks for making this one available.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Julia! And yes, this cake keeps well into the next day! Just store it covered in an airtight container (refrigerator or not, your choice). Enjoy!

Hi Sam, love your recipes! If I made this the night before a party, do you think it’ll keep well to the next day?

Yes it is. They will be slightly thinner than the 8 inch layers and may require a couple of minutes less in the oven. 🙂

This truly is the best chocolate cake recipe. It’s so moist and has such a great chocolate flavor. It’s easy to whip up too. I’ve made this for my son’s birthday the past couple of years. This is my go-to chocolate cake recipe from now on.

Honestly I can’t say for sure how it would turn out if you reduce the sugar that much. You’re going to be cutting a lot of moisture out of the cake. 🙁

I made this cake (but I used your chocolate buttercream frosting) for my husband’s birthday. He said it’s the BEST Chocolate Cake he’s ever had!

Hi Susanna! You will want the liquid amount to be the same, but you may want to air on the side of caution when using the espresso powder as it’s going to be much more potent. 🙂

Hi Kathryn! It can be baked in a single pan, but I am not sure what pan you are using or the volume of that pan. This will produce about 8 cups of batter. I’m not sure how long to bake it in your particular pan. 🙂

Love this cake it is my family go to recipe but I’m trying to make a numbered cake, can I bake it into a single pan? How long might it take? Or do I need to double the recipe? Thanks as always.

Hi Jasmine! This will likely fill 3 6 inch pans. It will certainly take less time in the oven. 🙂

Hi Megan! Doubling will work, but you may have some batter leftover. Enjoy!

In reply to Erin Rankin.

This was a good chocolate cake, easy to make. I enjoyed the taste. Was it the best? No. The chocolate cake I had in Vienna was much more moist and the chocolate was delicious. However, I really did enjoy this cake very much. It’s definitely a quality cake for any occasion.
